During Spring 2009, WOW:
- Hosted our 2nd Annual Equal Pay for Equal Work Bake Sale to raise funds for WOW and to educate students about the wage gap
- Participated in a Vermilion news story exposing so-called crisis pregnancy centers in Lafayette, LA
- Hosted a workshop that trained women to negotiate their salaries to help end the wage gap
- Tabled in the Student Union to educate students on the dangers so-called crisis pregnancy centers pose to women's health and rights.
- Collaborated with PFLAG to host a workshop training members to be activists for gay rights
- Attended the 2nd Annual Women's Leadership Conference at ULL
- Attended the NAACP's "Unity Fellowship" event to make connections and share resources with other student organizations on campus
- Attended and was represented at the 2nd Annual Young Women's Leadership Conference hosted by the Feminist Majority Foundation in Washington, DC. Mary Anne served on a panel during the plenary session on the "Campaign to Expose Fake Clinics" and shared WOW's experiences with the campaign at ULL.
- brought Campaign College to our campus. Campaign College is the only program in the nation to train college women to run for student government elected office on their college campuses. ULL was selected as one of thee pilot sites in the nation to host this program. During this intensive one-day FREE training, participants were taught how to assemble a campaign staff, develop and communicate an effective message, and how to reach out to the campus community when you win.
- trained members in networking and giving elevator speeches.
- met with Dr. Yongue, Director of Student Health Services, to share our experiences visiting one of Lafayette's crisis pregnancy centers. We were able to successfully lobby for increased transparency in SHS's referrals to these fake clinics. SHS staff will now inform students that these are not legitimate medical facilities, and that these crisis pregnancy centers have an anti-choice agenda which they promote at the expense of medically accurate, honest information.
- stuffed and passed out approximately 450 safe sex packets on campus for our Valentine's Day 2009 Sexual Health tabling event
- Adopted a bar downtown and accompanied Acadiana C.A.R.E.S. as they performed bar outreach at Seven.
- Collaborated with the sorority Delta Sigma Theta in planning their 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Forum "Justice for Spikes"
- Researched literature on emergency contraception to update Student Health Services
During Fall 2008, WOW:
- met with Director of Student Health Services Dr. Yongue and Associate Dean of Students Dean Cottonham to discuss Student Health Services. WOW successfully advocated that literature on emergency contraception be made available in the clinic as well as new informational videos that students must view prior to a Women's Wellness exam.
- saw a successful conclusion to the request for condoms to be available on campus. Student organizations are now allowed to distribute condoms on campus!
- student advisors met with Dean Pratt (Dean of Students) and Dean Cottonham (Assoc. Dean of Students) to present our research and to further discuss ULL's condom policy.
- researched the on-campus condom distribution policies of the seven other schools in the University of Louisiana system and found that ULL is the only school where student organizations are not allowed to distribute condoms on campus. Additionally, ULL and McNeese do not have condoms readily available in the lobby of their health center, but at McNeese there is currently an SGA initiative underway to get them there.
- sewed and sold adorable tampon and condom cozies and baked goods to benefit the Feminist Majority Foundation's Afghan Woman's Fund which trains midwifes in Afghanistan. WOW raised over $75!
- visited a crisis pregnancy center in Lafayette undercover as part of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Expose Fake Clinics
- participated in a Vermilion article exploring UL administration's refusal to allow student organizations to pass out condoms, and wrote in amazing letters to the editor on the subject.
- hosted a fabulous book club where we read and discussed short stories by Angela Carter with Dr. Mary Ann Wilson, Professor of English and WOW faculty advisor.
- wrote a grant for $5,000 for the American Association of University Women's 2008-2009 "Where the Girls Are" Campus Action Project
- created and hung up posters on why "America needs feminism" and why men and feminism are a great team!
- collaborated with Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta to host a Clothesline Project and the 2nd annual domestic violence candlelight vigil.
During Summer 2008, WOW:
- completed a letter to incoming ULL President Dr. Joseph Savoie highlighting our specific concerns with women's issues on campus
During Spring 2008, WOW:
- hosted guest speaker Julie Mickelberry, Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta
- created and passed out 300 goodie bags stuffed with information on STIs, condom usage, and resources on campus and in the community for our Valentine's Day 2008 Sexual Health tabling event
- took meetings with Dean Cottonham (Associate Dean of Students) and Dean Pratt (Dean of Students) to discuss why condoms are not allowed to be distributed on ULL's campus
- distributed over 250 Planned Parenthood condoms "off campus" at PJs Coffee and Tea to promote safer sex on UL's campus
- created pro-woman display cases during March at the Edith Garland Dupré Library to celebrate Women's History Month
- collected quotes and photos from over 20 students and professors about why they are feminists and hung them up for Women's History Month
- presented a seminar called "This Is What A Feminist Looks Like" to students of the University Honors program
- attended the first annual Lafayette Women Leaders' Social hosted by the Lafayette Commission on the Needs of Women
- Assisted the sorority Delta Sigma Theta in planning their 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Forum "Justice for Spikes."
- submitted a letter to the Vermilion's editor about a biased news article concerning contraceptives.
- hosted guest speaker Ola Prejean, Vice-President of the League of Women Voters for a meeting focused on politics
- hosted a Letter Writing Night to encourage students to contact their legislators to voice their opinions
During Fall 2007, WOW:
- sponsored an Equal Pay For Equal Work bake sale to educate students about the wage gap
- hosted Dr. Gentry from the Department of History and Geography for a lecture on the wage gap
- created and hung up "Thank A Feminist" fliers around campus
